July 24 shortly after 2:00am Inyo County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a domestic violence restraining order violation at 969 Tu Su Lane. Upon arrival of the deputies, neither the reporting party nor the suspect could be located. While looking in the area, the deputies noticed a male subject across the street at the Chevron station, which was closed; the subject was agitated and yelling.
When the first deputy contacted the subject (32 year old Bishop man, George Barlow III) Barlow asked, “Can I kill you too?” Barlow then charged the deputy with his pit bull closely behind him. The deputy continually ordered Barlow to stop charging. When Barlow came within 10 feet, the deputy deployed his Taser. Due to the heavy clothing Barlow was wearing, the Taser had no effect on Barlow. Barlow removed his heavy sweater.
The second deputy responded to the Chevron at this point and after Barlow refused to follow commands, he deployed his Taser striking Barlow in the upper abdomen. This caused Barlow to fall to the ground. Before the deputies were able to handcuff him, Barlow sat up and removed the Taser darts.
Deputies transitioned to a baton and after striking him, Barlow grabbed the baton and attempted to get it away from the deputy. During the incident, Barlow commanded his dog to attack the deputies. Both deputies received dog bites before a deputy was able to shoot the dog. Barlow was pepper sprayed which caused him to release his grasp on the baton and charge at the deputies.
Verbal commands were continued to be given to Barlow which he ignored. The Sheriff’s Office deployed its canine which was able to subdue Barlow until an additional officer from the Bishop Police Department arrived and they were able to handcuff Barlow. Deputies immediately provided medical aid until an ambulance responded to medically clear Barlow before transport.
The Sheriff’s Office has seen and is reviewing the social media video capturing this incident. After a thorough investigation of this incident it will be referred to the District Attorney for review. Stopping all my donations to the Sheriff’s office following today. truly disgusting behavior exhibited by the both of them, disgusting thugs.
This use of force is completely justified. The shooting of the dog is completely justified (but sad of course). The suspect brought this all down on himself by not following basic instructions, resisting arrest, and trying the assault officers. Play stupid games and you will win stupid prizes. I think all of Law Enforcement is hiring these days so if any of you keyboard commandos in Bishop to put on your big boy or big girl pants why don’t you do it and show all these “bad cops” how to do their jobs and how to better restrain a large combative male from. They are taking applications. I am serious. Go show them how to do it. Lets see it.

Police don’t hire people who can think for themselves and who would disrupt the status quo. That’s why you never see police standing up to each other for bad behaviour. When police are held accountable they just pout and refuse to do their jobs.

Yes. ..in all honesty it doesn’t appear that Mr. Barlow had “Commanded” his 4 legged FRIEND to attack anyone. If anything it appears that his canine companion was looking very stressed out and confused as to why these two men (Police/Sheriff’s/Cop’s. ..whatever their Lawful titles are) were attacking his master. That dog actually showed ALOT of restraint on his behalf. ALOT more than what can be said about the two law enforcement officials. I also just heard from someone who lives in Bishop that this young man Mr. George Barlow III is in the I.C.U. But I am not too positive on how accurate that information is.
I am responding to the video. This young man and his dog were treated callously. These two peace officer was behaving with hatred. This was so close to the reservation and apartments. This looked like the dog was being inquisitive as to what was happening to his friend. This young man had no weapon he was defenseless. Lie, peace officers’ and say you were afraid, this is what this young person was feeling. I am certain. The dog was too. You two were not brave. You were cowards.

Seems like this article is written from the police perspective and purposefully tries to make Barlow look bad, using some random out of context quote. Not surprised, but still disappointed.

It says in the very first sentence of the news posting that “Sierra Wave received the following press release from the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office and Sierra Wave will be following up with information from witnesses.” Sierra Wave contacted Sheriff Hollowell immediately on learning of this story and the videos. We also spoke to the Public Information Officer. They agreed they would put out a press release on the incident as soon as possible.
Sierra Wave is, at the same time, attempting to get in touch with witnesses, permission to use videos and permission to use names where possible. The comments from both the Bishop Police Department and the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office are PRESS RELEASES and state their positions in their own words and do not represent the views or opinions of Sierra Wave Media or News.
I hope the investigating agency isn’t going to be the Sheriff’s Department. I don’t trust Sheriff Hollowell to conduct an honest investigation. Does the Sheriff’s Department have bodycams, if so were they on? It would be interesting to view the bodycam video because from what I saw it didn’t look like the dog bit the deputy. I’ve seen dogs in attack mode and that didn’t look like attack mode to me. It looked like he thought they were playing. The use of force was not justified nor was killing the dog. Was law enforcement from the same agency? It looked like the one was a CHP officer.
